Introduction to Galway City
(Gaillimh)
Town in neighbouring Republic of Ireland
Galway
is not only a county town but also the largest conurbation in the west of Ireland.
Positioned at the mouth of the Corrib river in the northeast corner of Galway
Bay makes it an excellent port; from the original quays on the east bank of
the river the docks have extended southeast into Lough Atalia.
Galway has grown from a mediaeval village of narrow streets into a lively
cathedral / University city with a lot of modern industries.
The Galway Arts Festival held annually in July for 10 days, now has became more
popular than the traditional Oyster Festival held in late September.
Recommended excursions around the Galway area are; Lough Corrib by boat or road;
west to the seaside resort of Salthill; further west to the lakes and mountains
of Connemara; south to the aran islands in Galway Bay; southeast over the Gort
lowlands, a limestone region; south and west to the Burren with it's unusual
rock formation.
